Addition

In year 3, we have been learning to add 3-digit numbers in order to answer the question:

"How can addition be used to budget for Forest School"

For new areas of learning, we use the approach of concrete, pictorial, abstract in order to gain a deep understanding of the concepts being taught. For addition, we started adding 3-digit numbers without regrouping, getting used to the methods that were to be learned.

We started with using place value counters, followed by drawing these in our books and finally using a written method. We followed this process regrouping 1s for 10s and 10s for 100s and before moving on to regrouping both in the same calculation.

Each lesson, children are encouraged to answer reasoning questions to give them an opportunity to justify and explain their thinking.
