English – ‘The House with the Chicken Legs’

L.O. I can define and explain what a proverb is.

  1. I can create my own proverb.

Baba Yaga often quotes proverbs when she talks to Marinka. (Proverbs are short sayings that contain traditional wisdom or advice.)

Here are a few of Baba’s proverbs- what do each of them mean to you?

  • It’s not how long a life, but how sweet a life that counts.

  • Beware the goat from the front, the horse from the rear and the living from all sides.

  • The morning is wiser than the evening.

  • The nightingale that sings finds a song.

Key Question: What other proverbs have you heard, and what do they mean to you?

Share, discuss, make notes and research further!

TASK

Spend a bit of time researching proverbs and make a bullet pointed list of the ones that you like, with their meanings.

Here are some to get you started:

  • The only way to be a friend is to have one.

  • Actions speak louder than words.

  • A bad workman blames his tools.

Challenge: Can you make a proverb of your own?

If you have time, you can try and make up some of your own. A tip to help you with this would be to think of an important message first and think of a clever way you could say this.
