9:30-10:15 Guided Reading

Know (understanding)

LO: To understand how a writer uses inference in a text.

SC1. I can explain what inference is.

SC2. I can give examples of inference from the text.

SC3. I can explain why an author wants us to use the skill of inference.

Each day, as well as including the text for you to read, I am also including the audio recording of the chapter. You should only use this is you feel you need support to develop your understanding of the text and/or to support you with your reading.

Group One – Ch 21

Use a dictionary to find the following words:

Commiserating

Solemn

Mutual

Doted

In this chapter, we discover why Emilie’s grandfather bought Joey and what happens at the end of the story. Answer the following questions in your books, using the text to support your answers:

1) Why do you think that the Sergeant and the Major pretend to not know what Albert is talking about when he tried to thank them for trying to buy Joey?

2) Why do you think Emilie’s grandfather decided to sell Joey to Albert? Use the text to support your explanation.

3) Why do you think he only wanted a penny for Joey, even though he had bought Joey for much more?

Group Two – Page 180-182

Use a dictionary to find the following words

Solemn

Hobbled

In this chapter, we discover why Emilie’s grandfather bought Joey and what happens at the end of the story. Answer the following questions in your books, using the text to support your answers:

1) Why do you think Emilie’s grandfather decided to sell Joey to Albert? Use the text to support your explanation.

2) Why do you think he only wanted a penny for Joey, even though he had bought Joey for much more?

10:15-11:00 Maths

L.O. To demonstrate the steps required when using the compact method (with regrouping)
SC1: I can present my work neatly
SC2: I can identify when and how I need to regroup
SC3: I can regroup accurately
SC4: I can solve multiplication problems (4-digit x 2-digit)

Today you are combining the skills you developed on Tuesday when regrouping and the skills you developed over the last couple of days multiplying by a 2-digit number using the compact method.

You will follow through the tutorial, including completing a worked example, then work through the questions on the PowerPoint. At the end there is an extension question as well as an opportunity for Reflection.

Mark through your own work using the separate PowerPoint and correct any mistakes.

11:00-11:15 Break

11:15-12:30 English

Final Write

Today, I would like you to take both sections of your final outcome, put them together  and present them in a manner of your choosing.

In WW1 soldiers would often hand write their letters or if possible they would type them. You can choose either method to present you work. Remember, if you decide to hand write your letter, you must use your very best hand writing.

You could, for an additional challenge, also video yourself reading your letter. These videos will be put onto out YouTube channel so you must have permission from your parents.

12:30-1:30 Lunch

1:30-2:45 History

Show (applying)
L.O. To create your final draft of a WW1 trench system
SC1: I can edit and improve my work using given feedback
SC2: I can describe WW1 trench components
SC3: I can explain why my trench system is the best
SC4: I can justify my choices

Task 1: Using the feedback I have provided, edit and improve your trench system. This may include adding more description, labelling areas of your trench or improving the structure. You may want to add colour and detailed drawings for your trench.
Task 2: Write a short paragraph explaining why your trench system is so good - what has it included? Have you positioned components in a certain position to give you an advantage?

Extension Task - Either as a separate paragraph or as added information on your diagram, justify your choices and positions of components.
For example: Why have you put your signalling post there? Why have you put your communication trench there? Why have you included a pack of cards? Why have you got a dog in your trench?

Your trench system can either be drawn or built using materials around your home.

2:45-3:00 Effective Communication
