LO: To understand how a writer uses inference in a text.
SC1. I can explain what inference is.
SC2. I can give examples of inference from the text.
SC3. I can explain why an author wants us to use the skill of inference.
Each day, as well as including the text for you to read, I am also including the audio recording of the chapter. You should only use this is you feel you need support to develop your understanding of the text and/or to support you with your reading.
Group One – Ch 16
Use a dictionary to find the following words:
During this chapter, both sides try to get Joey to come over to them. Answer the following questions in your books, using the text to support your answers:
1) In the first paragraph, Joey describes the smell of food. What can you infer about Joey’s feelings about food at this point? Use the text to support your answers.
2) Why do you think the soldier clipped his way “methodically” through the barbed wire?
3) Why do you think that Joey trust someone who approaches him with a “cupped” hand?
4) After the coin toss, the two soldiers discuss how they would resolve all of their problems. What can you infer about how they feel about the war and the people who are responsible for it? What can you infer about how these two soldiers feel about each other during this conversation? Give evidence from the text to support your answer.
Group Two – 132-134
Use a dictionary to find the following words:
1) During the war, these soldiers have been fighting and solving arguments with guns and bombs. Why do you think they decide to settle this argument with a coin toss? What does that tell you about how they feel about the war?
2) After the coin toss, the two soldiers discuss how they would resolve all of their problems. What can you infer about how they feel about the war and the people who are responsible for it? What can you infer about how these two soldiers feel about each other during this conversation? Give evidence from the text to support your answer.
During WW1 there was a famous incident where soldiers left there trenches and played football:
Late on Christmas Eve 1914, men of the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) heard German troops in the trenches opposite them singing carols and patriotic songs and saw lanterns and small fir trees along their trenches. Messages began to be shouted between the trenches.
The following day, British and German soldiers met in no man's land and exchanged gifts, took photographs and some played impromptu games of football. They also buried casualties and repaired trenches and dugouts. After Boxing Day, meetings in no man's land dwindled out.
The truce was not observed everywhere along the Western Front. Elsewhere the fighting continued and casualties did occur on Christmas Day. Some officers were unhappy at the truce and worried that it would undermine fighting spirit.
After 1914, the High Commands on both sides tried to prevent any truces on a similar scale happening again. Despite this, there were some isolated incidents of soldiers holding brief truces later in the war, and not only at Christmas.
Events like this were very rare. Why do you think this was? Would you have to be brave to climb out of the trenches? What were the risks? Write a paragraph about this subject, giving reasons for you ideas.

Continuing with the compact method we are looking at 4-digit x 1-digit numbers, e.g. 3,123 x 3.
There will be no regrouping today so it is following the same process as Friday but with slightly larger numbers.

Today, you will be using the plan you created on Friday to help you write your final outcome. I have split the outcome into two parts:
Description of the bombardment from the trenches
Description of the events surrounding the discovery of the horse in no-man’s-land
Final paragraph, where you sign off your letter.
Today, we are only focussing on Section one. I do not want you to move onto the next section. You will write this section on Wednesday.

The video below is taken in Ypres, in Belgium and shows a glimpse of what it would be like to walk through a trench. Michael Morpurgo was invited to a conference here after writing War Horse and it was where he got his inspiration to write Private Peaceful, the story you are listening to during Story Time.
Task 1: I would like you to consider the benefits and difficulties of having a trench system like this. If you were a soldier would you find it easy to move around and understand the different sections?
Task 2: Draw and label a bird's eye view of what you think a trench would look like - you might want to include both the British and German sides.
