Maths – Multiplication

Lesson 17 – Multiplication

LO: To use the grid method when solving word problems.

1. I can consider how to read a word problem and find important information.

2. I can use the information to create a number sentence.

3. I can use the multiplication grid method to solve problems.

Today, we will continue to look at different types of word problems and how we can use our knowledge of multiplication arrays and grids to help us solve the problems.

You may wish to refer to Friday’s video to refresh your memory:

We can solve word problems such as:

“A library has 5 shelves. Each shelf contains 54 books. How many books are there in total?”

For this problem you need to highlight the key bits of information:

5 shelves          54 books

We can now use this information to create our number sentence:

5 x 54 =

e now solve by partitioning the numbers and creating our multiplication grids.

T

O

x

50

4

5

250

20

We can now recombine our answer to get:

5 x 54 = 270

Today, I want you to consolidate your understanding by solving a mix of word and number multiplication problems. For each problem I would like you to use your multiplication grids. Remember to use a ruler when drawing your grids.

The problems and solutions can be found on today’s PowerPoint, attached below.

English -  Report features

This week, we are going to be focussing on the outdoors and thinking about plants. “How does your garden grow?” will be helping us learn more about plants and how to grow some plants of our own. Have a look at this week’s challenge video below:

LO: To understand the features of a report

SC1) I can discuss the features of a report

SC2) I can identify the features of a report

SC3) I can define and explain the features of a report

We are learning about growing plants and by the end of the week we will have planted some of our own. In order for us to record our plant growth, we are going to be learning how to write a report.

Today we are going to be learning about the features of a report. Watch the video below for information about features of a report and your first few tasks.

Task 1 – Discuss the features in a report with somebody.

Task 2 – Look at the second report in the video. Can you identify and explain the features? I have attached the word document below.

Task 3 – Write the features of a report in your journal and write a few sentences of what they are and what they look like in a report. If you find this tricky, discuss with an adult the features and what they are used for.

Experience – What do I know?

LO: Reflect upon my current knowledge of a subject

SC1) I can discuss my understanding of plants

SC2) I can record what I know about plants

SC3) I can ask questions to further my learning

To begin with, we are going to be recording what we already know about plants. Use the below questions to help with your thinking:

What do I know about plants?

What types of plants do I know?

What are the different parts of plants?

What do plants need to grow?

Do you have any questions you would like to know?

We are recording this information with colour, drawings and writing, just like we would with our reflective journals. You can record your information in any way you wish. Have a look at my example below.

2:30-3:15

Arithmetic

As well as using our TTRockstars and Mathletics online resources we also want you to develop some strategies to help you with mental maths. This will include subjects such as your times tables and number bonds etc.

This week we want you to develop strategies for recalling your 3x tables.

Many of you have a good understanding of your 3x tables but as you progress into Year 4 you will need to have very fast recall of the facts. So to help you I have found some nice online videos. You can choose which strategy you like and then use that to help you practice your 3x tables every day this week.

You can use these strategies or perhaps research a new one with the support of an adult.

For a bit of fun you could learn this 3x tables song:

If you would like an additional challenge you can print out and test yourself using the free multiplication generator:

http://www.timestables.me.uk/printable-pdf-quiz-generator.htm

You can select the times tables quiz you want and the number of questions.

As an extra challenge you can time yourself each day and try to beat your score and your time.

Good Luck!
