SC3. I can consider why the author has chosen this vocabulary.

This week we are focussing on the vocabulary used by an author and the impact it has upon the reader. To help you understand more about this week’s questions I have created a video:

Group One – page 1-7

Use a dictionary to find a definition for the following words:

Eye-catching

Ostentatious

Element

Embellished

Relic

Niche

In this part of the text, you are introduced to the Strange Worlds travel agency for the first time. Use the text to help you answer the following questions:

1) The author describes the shop as being soaked in magic. Why do you think he has used this particular word to describe the shop?

2) On page 3, the author say that today was to be “a very busy day” by Jonathan’s “standards”. What does the author mean by this? What is she trying to say about this character?

3) On page 5, find the word which shows that the boy was confused by Jonathan’s answers.

4) What does the vocabulary “technological relic” tell us about the shop?

11:00-11:15 Break

11:15-12:30 English

Know (understanding)

LO: To understand how precise language can be used when using expanded noun phrases.

SC1. I can identify expanded noun phrases.

SC2. I can consider the impact different adjectives have upon the reader.

SC3. I can use precise vocabulary when creating my own expanded noun phrases.

In the past you have learnt about nouns (a person, place or thing) and expanded noun phrases (at least one adjective is used to describe the noun). In Year 5, an expectation is that you are not only able to identify and use expanded noun phrases but that you are also able to “precise” expanded noun phrases to convey information "concisely"

Over the next few lessons, we will recap expanded noun phrases and consider how to use “precise” vocabulary. In today’s lesson, we are focussing on identifying expanded noun phrases and considering if there are better vocabulary choices we can make.

To help with today’s lesson, I have created a series of videos, a PowerPoint, worksheets and adjective word mats.

Task One

  • Watch my videos on expanded noun phrases and “precise” vocabulary.

  • For additional support watch the second video on how to create a sentence which includes an expanded noun phrase.

Task Two

  • Go through today’s PowerPoint to remind yourself of the features of expanded noun phrases.
  • Identify the expanded noun phrases in the sentences attached to today’s PowerPoint (I have also created a separate attachment for you to print if you wish). The answers are on the slide just after the questions.
  • Look at what concise expanded noun phrases are.
  • Identify the concise noun phrases in the sentences attached to today’s PowerPoint (I have also created a separate attachment for you to print if you wish). The answers are on the slide just after the questions.

Task Three – Challenge

In guided reading today, we learnt about the Strange Worlds Travel Agency and at the end of the text one of the suitcases opened:

“At the sound of the suitcase bursting open, Jonathan turned around, startled, his wood-and-leather swivel chair screeching on its casters. The suitcase lid flew open and a torrent of water splashed out of it.”

For today’s challenge task I would like you to continue the story. I would like you to focus on using precise expanded noun phrases when writing your description of who and what comes out of the suitcase. You should write at least one paragraph explaining what happens.
