Guided Reading

LO: To be able to understand how to use inference

SC1: I can identify what inference is

SC2: I can understand what inference can tell me about a text

SC3: I can justify my inferences

As we have finished the David Wiesman book Tuesday at the end of last week, we will start a new book to continue with our work on inference.

We will be reading through one of my favourite stories from when I was a child

I have uploaded the pages we are reading below. Please read through them and answer the questions below.

Questions - Do not forget to justify your answer, use the conjunction because. I think this because...

  1. Can you infer why the author included thank you very much when describing the Dursleys?
  2. Can you infer what the author means by undursleyish on page 2?
  3. What can you infer about Mr Dursley humming when he was getting ready for work?
  4. What are Mr Dursleys thoughts and feelings if he 'jerked' his head around?
  5. Can you infer why Mr Dursley would be enraged that some of the wierdos were not young?
  6. What can you infer Mr Dursley's thoughts and feelings would be if he did see the owls in his office window?
  7. What might Mr Dursley do if he came across some of the weirdos on his lunch break?

LO: To be able show my understanding of dialogue

SC1: I can identify how to punctuate dialogue

SC2: I can identify how to use a reported clause

SC3: I can understand how to relate the dialogue to the story

As we have finished the David Wiesman book Tuesday at the end of last week we are now going to start writing our story to go along with the pictures.

If you are unsure of the story then have a look at this video. Or there is a powerpoint with the pictures attached below.

If we were in class I would have some of the pictures available to you to pick which one you wanted to write the story to. As we have the video, I would like you to pause it at the point you would like to describe. Which part of the story did you enjoy the most? Choose that part to add the story.

Today you will be planning what you are going to write. I have attached a planning grid to help you structure your plan, as well as a model planning grid to see what I expect.

Things to think about when planning

  • How will your dialogue help the story?

  • How will your characters act when they speak? Do they stand still and do nothing?

Break time/snack time
