Monday 8th June

Good morning!

Today is another Monday and the new challenge video is up and running. Make sure you take a look!

We will allot time on Friday for completing the challenge outcome. Throughout the week, we will be participating in learning which should help us when we get to the outcome day. We are aspiring, persevering, reflective learners, so we will be doing some work in our reflective journal throughout the week. To make sure you know which lessons are linked to our weekly challenge, we will mark the lesson with a  and AYOC to show it is part of The year of change activities.

Please send us your work from the previous learning if you haven’t done so already. Have a good day!

Your child should start their phonics session by watching a video which introduces a new sound. The video can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCo7fbLgY2oA_cFCIg9GdxtQ?fbclid=IwAR2zPh6YahiI_fOxLD_ikMQES-EWj_l_6L8MYTCYYUYMBv-1DePkw5_7--E.

If the link doesn't work try clicking on this link https://www.ruthmiskin.com/en/find-out-more/help-during-school-closure/ and then click on either the YouTube link or the Facebook link on the first line.

The videos are only streamed at certain times of the day and are set depending. The times are:

  • Set 1 Speed Sounds at 9.30am

  • Set 2 Speed Sounds at 10.00am

  • Set 3 Speed Sounds at 10.30am

(It may be better to do mental maths and problem solving first and come back to phonics, if your video is at a later time)

In terms of the reading section of the phonics lesson, Oxford Owl are making all the phonics books available online as ebooks. Here is the link https://home.oxfordowl.co.uk/reading/reading-schemes-oxford-levels/read-write-inc-phonics-guide/

Once you’ve clicked on the link then click on ebooks and then you need to register but it is completely free. Once registered you can then open all the ebooks and choose the correct banded level for your child.

This means you do not need to look at the RWI books on the school website and we will not be adding any further books there.

Guided reading:

If your child is not in a phonics group and instead does guided reading, please find newly uploaded texts on the Butterflies home learning page here: https://www.sealprimary.com/page/?title=Home+Learning&pid=470, please find today’s timetable and the text will be there.

LO: to identify the similarities and differences between modern and some toys from the past.

SC1: I can identify what toys from today and the past are made from.

SC2: I can identify the purpose/function of a toy

SC3: I can consider the different toys.

This challenge is about look at life before technology! What did everyone do without technology? We are going to research and look at different games and forms of entertainment before technology.

To start with we are going to compare how toys have changed from the past to the present.

Today we are going to have a look at some modern toys and some toys from the past to see how they differ.

Firstly, think about your favourite toy. What does it do? Does it move? Do you know how it works? What do you think it’s made from?

What kinds of toys do children today get to play with? See if you can make a list.

What are these made from? A lot are made from plastic!

We are now going to start our journey back in time! Here is a timeline of toys:

From this you can see some of the toys your grandparents and parents might have played with. See if you can ask someone what toys they played with as a child. Do your parents or guardians have any toys that they played with as a child? Are they different to yours? Are the similar to yours? What are they made from?

Pick your favourite toy and pick a past toy from one of the pictures below or a toy of your parent or grandparent. Can you write a sentence about what is similar and what is different?

Challenge: What do you notice about this toy from the 60’s? Do you recognise it?

Key vocabulary: Toys, favourite, today, modern, new, present, now, past, then, before, after, old, older.

SC1: I can state the devices I already know to improve sentences.

SC2: I can state a conjunction.

SC3: I can explain what the different conjunctions do.

Let’s recap what we know we can add to our sentences to improve them. Can you remember any?

What is an adjective? These descriptive words can help give information about size, shape, age, colour, origin, material, purpose, feelings, condition, and personality, or texture.

What is a sentence opener? Can you think of any? We have been using some time order words like first, next, yesterday etc. They give us some information about when something is happening. You can also give information about where something takes place. Here are some more examples:

Today we are going to make our sentences longer and learn about conjunctions.
