Seal Church Of England Primary School

Thursday 11th June

Good morning!

We will allot time on Friday for completing the challenge outcome. Throughout the week, we will be participating in learning which should help us when we get to the outcome day. We are aspiring, persevering, reflective learners, so we will be doing some work in our reflective journal throughout the week. To make sure you know which lessons are linked to our weekly challenge, we will mark the lesson with a  and AYOC to show it is part of The year of change activities.

Please send us your work from the previous learning if you haven’t done so already. Have a good day!

Time

Learning

Phonics

Your child should start their phonics session by watching a video which introduces a new sound. The video can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCo7fbLgY2oA_cFCIg9GdxtQ?fbclid=IwAR2zPh6YahiI_fOxLD_ikMQES-EWj_l_6L8MYTCYYUYMBv-1DePkw5_7--E.

If the link doesn't work try clicking on this link https://www.ruthmiskin.com/en/find-out-more/help-during-school-closure/ and then click on either the YouTube link or the Facebook link on the first line.

The videos are only streamed at certain times of the day and are set depending. The times are:

  • Set 1 Speed Sounds at 9.30am

  • Set 2 Speed Sounds at 10.00am

  • Set 3 Speed Sounds at 10.30am

(It may be better to do mental maths and problem solving first and come back to phonics, if your video is at a later time)

In terms of the reading section of the phonics lesson, Oxford Owl are making all the phonics books available online as ebooks. Here is the link https://home.oxfordowl.co.uk/reading/reading-schemes-oxford-levels/read-write-inc-phonics-guide/

Once you’ve clicked on the link then click on ebooks and then you need to register but it is completely free. Once registered you can then open all the ebooks and choose the correct banded level for your child.

This means you do not need to look at the RWI books on the school website and we will not be adding any further books there.

Guided reading:

If your child is not in a phonics group and instead does guided reading, please find newly uploaded texts on the Butterflies home learning page here: https://www.sealprimary.com/page/?title=Home+Learning&pid=470, please find today’s timetable and the text will be there.

10:00-10:30

Writing

We are going to write a short story in 5 sentences.

The yellow boxes are where you write your sentences. Some of you may already recognise some of the pictures I drew. The pictures stand for this:

Once upon a time … (who lived/who was …)

One day …

Unfortunately, …

Luckily, …

Finally, …

For example,

Once upon a time, there was a dog, who was very grumpy!

One day, the dog went for a walk.

Unfortunately, there was a huge bolder in the road!

Luckily, the dog was very good at jumping and jumped right over the top of it!

Finally, the dog made it to the park where he met his friend Rosie.

See if you can have a go! How many can you write?

Challenge: can you make your story more interesting by using adjectives and conjunctions?

History AYOC

LO: to learn about changes within living memory

SC1: I can explain how toys have changed over time

SC2: I can explain how they have impacted on the toys we play with today

SC3: I can use evidence to help me

Over the past few days, we have been looking at different toys from different eras. Remember our challenge is based on what life was like before technology, so this meant there were no TV’s, no computers, no iPads or tablets, no phones and in the Victorian time not even a radio! That means the children only had their toys, family and friends, their learning and the outdoors to keep them entertained.

Challenge: if your family agree, see if you can spend this evening with no technology.

We have been learning about lots of different toys.

Have a think about the main changes between modern toys and the toys from the past we have looked at. What are they?

  1. Materials - what they are made from

  1. Technology – using electricity or batteries to work

  1. Safety rules – making sure the toys are made from things that are safe

  1. Attitudes – girls and boys can play with all toys

Materials

Most toys used to be made from different materials such as paper, wood and metal. As technology has improved, other materials have developed, such as plastic, which means toys are often safer to play with than they were in the past.

What are most of your toys made from?

Technology

As technology has developed and improved, toys have been able to do more clever and complicated things. Lots of toys are now electrical and have moving parts.

How many of your toys use batteries?

Safety rules

Toys are now much safer than they were in the past. Toys are tested before they are sold to make sure they are safe enough for children to play with. There are also lots of rules which toy makers must follow to ensure their toys are safe.

Many toys also show which age they are appropriate for. This helps adults to choose toys which are safe for their children to play with.

Can you think of any toys which wouldn’t be safe for babies?

Attitudes

Gradually over time, attitudes towards toys have changed.

In the Victorian times, children played with specific toys, now boys and girls play with all kinds of different toys.

Schools have also changed. Schools now recognise how important it is for children to play with toys. Lots of nurseries and schools are now full of toys to help children learn.

Can you imagine what our school would be like without any toys?

Task

Write a sentence about each main change in your book.

Challenge: can you imagine what life would be like if technology hadn’t progressed. For example, what if computers and iPads didn’t exist? What if plastic didn’t exist? How would life be different? How would toys be different?

English AYOC

LO: to write a piece of creative writing

SC1: I can use adjectives

SC2: I can use conjunctions

SC3: I can use sentence openers.

We are going to start by reading a story. Please see the eBook attached at the bottom of this page.

In this story the toys come to life! We are going to be writing our own story about a toy coming to life, but first we are going to write a character description about them!

Over the past few days, we have been looking at different toys from different eras. Remember our challenge is based on what life was like before technology, so we would like you to pick a toy that is from the early 20th century or a toy from the Victorian time. If you have forgotten some of the toys we have looked at, here are a few examples to help you pick: a doll, a train, a car, a rocking horse, a toy soldier or a boat as a few examples.

To start with we are going to think about what our imaginary character is like. What is your toy like? Pick three adjectives to help you. See if you can use our conjunctions and and but to help you, like we did in our game with foods.

Example: The doll is caring and cheerful but not brave.

Once you’ve done that we need to think about our setting. Where is your story going to be set? A forest, by the sea, in an attic?

Now pick three words to describe it!

Example: The forest was ancient, peaceful, and silent.

Now we are going to have a go at our first draft of our story. We are going to use the 5 sentence story we looked at this morning to help us! Here is a reminder of what it looks like.

Once upon a time … (who lived/who was …)

One day …

Unfortunately, …

Luckily, …

Finally, …

Let’s have a go! Below is an example to help you start:

For example:

Once upon a time there was a doll who was caring and cheerful but not brave.

One day in an ancient, peaceful forest, there was a strange noise!

Unfortunately, as the doll was made of china, she was terrified of the noise and she was scared that she could get broken.

Luckily, there were lots of creatures living in the forest and they heard her cries. A curious squirrel found her in a clearing and asked her what was wrong. When he realised the problem, he laughed out loud! “That isn’t a strange noise!” he said. “That’s just the sound of the river.” Soon the doll was feeling much better.

Finally, the doll went on her way, feeling much braver because of her friend the squirrel.

Challenge: Can you use some emotions in your story to tell the reader how your character is feeling.

Key vocabulary: adjective, conjunction, character

French

At school, we learnt some greeting in French. We learnt to say hello, thank you and goodbye. Remind yourself by watching this video.

We have learnt about the colours, numbers to 20 and some of you may have had a go at head, shoulders, knees and toes.

Have a go at this version of head, shoulders, knees and toes https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0EFXCdryyRM

See if you can use the song to label the parts of your face
