Maths – Multiplication

Today's lesson 

 

 

Multiplication

Over the next few weeks we will be learning how to use multiplication to solve 2-digit by 1-digit number problems. We will be focussing on using the times tables we have already learnt (2,3,4,5 and 8s) and we will be using arrays and eventually a more formal written method.

To help you complete your maths tasks you will need some paper, a pencil, ruler and if you are not confident with multiplication you can print out a copy of the multiplication square (found as an attachment below).

Lesson 1 - Creating Arrays

An array is a visual method for solving problems e.g.

3 x 4 =

An array is created using rows and columns. In the problem 3 x 4 = we have 3 rows and 4 columns. When solving a problem using an array we can either count the individual shapes/counters or we can use repeated addition to solve the problem:

Counting the rows: 4+4+4=12

Counting the columns: 3+3+3+3=12

For today’s lesson we would like you to use arrays to solve multiplication problems. You must draw the arrays into you books and show your answers.

History – research tools used by Palaeolithic Man

As you are aware, Paleolithic men and women were no longer on the move and began to settle down in homes. They would stay in one place instead of hunting and gathering their food from all over.

For this part of the day, we would like you to use your research skills in finding out about the tools the Paleolithic man used. This could include what they are made of, how they were made, what tools were made and what they used them for. Don't forget to record your research and include pictures too!

History – research crops and animals used by Palaeolithic Man

As time moved from the Neolithic age to the Paleolithic age, the men and women began to grow their own food and raise their own animals.

We would like you to research how people living in the Paleolithic age would use crops and animals to help them survive. Again, we would like you to record this in your journal and use pictures as well as writing.
