Know (understanding)

LO: To understand how embedded clauses are used to add detail.

SC1. I can explain why we use embedded clauses.

SC2. I can identify different types of embedded clauses.

SC3. I can translate my knowledge into my own embedded clauses.

Today, we are going to consider how we can add extra details to our setting descriptions. We have looked at these skills before in a different context and over the next few days we will recap these skills and apply them in our writing.

Our focus for today is “embedded clauses”. To help you understand more about this subject I have put together a PowerPoint and two videos.

Task One

Watch my video explaining what an embedded clause is and how we can use them to add detail to our writing.

If you need additional support, I have also put together a step-by-step guide to creating an embedded clause.

Task Two

Read through the PowerPoint, stopping at the section where you need to answer the questions. You will need to identify the embedded clauses in the text. Next, add embedded clauses and the correct punctuation to turn simple sentences into complex sentences.

Task Three – Superstsar Challenge

In guided reading today, Flick has entered an eerie world. She has discovered a shabby, abandoned lighthouse, which she is now entering:

“The door groaned and swung outwards, releasing a sour smell of yeast and coldness that made flick wrinkled her nose as she stepped into the cool space.”

For today’s challenge task I would like you to continue the story. I would like you to focus on using embedded clauses to add extra information to your description. Don’t forget to keep using your “precise” expanded noun phrases as well.
