The Masked Reader
First up - to celebrate World Book Day we have our teachers performing the Masked Reader! They are reading extracts from their favourite book or poem. Can you work out who each character is? Fill in the resource at the bottom of the page with your guesses!

9:30-10:00 Guided Reading

Each day, as well as including the text for you to read, I am also including the audio recording of the chapter. You should only use this is you feel you need support to develop your understanding of the text and/or to support you with your reading.


Know (understanding)

LO: To understand how inference is used to engage the reader.

SC1. I can explain what inference means.

SC2. I can find examples of inference.

SC3. I can explain why an author might wish the reader to use the skill of inference.


Story catch-up:

Jonathan and Flick escape from the forest world and Jonathan explains to Flick that it is not possible for them to ever stay too long on another world. If they ever did it would mean that they would use up their own “life-force” quicker than normal and this would mean that they would die. Jonathan decides that the best place to find his father is “The City of Five Lights”, where there is another Strangeworlds Society outpost.


Group One – page 201-207

Use a dictionary to find a definition for the following words:










In this part of the text, we learn about the people who live in the City of Five Lights. We learn a little bit about their lives and what their work can be. Use the text to help you answer the following questions:


1) What does the author mean by the iron gas-lamps were “dozing in the day before their nightshift.”?

2) Why would the shops be “elbowing one another out of the way for prominence”?

3) Why do you think Flick had to take a second look at the people?

4) Why does the author use the word disheartened to describe how Flick feels at the end of the chapter?

1) Why do you think Flick had to take a second look at the people?

2) On page 204, which description tells us that the city was very busy?

10:00-10:15 Weekly Spelling Rule

Each week we are going to focus on a new spelling rule. To help you learn this new rule I would like oyu to login to SpellingFrame daily and try some of the free activities, which are linked the spelling rule you are learning. To access the spelling rule you will simply need to:

1) Click on this link to take you straight to the web page - SpellingFrame

2) Click on Year 5 and 6

3) Choose the rule you are focussing on e.g. Spelling Rule 45

4) Click Play to access some activities - Pease note that not all the activities are free. Some require a subscription.

5) You can also click on view words and print words to see the words you will be focussing on for that week.

6) Click on "segment cards" to allow you to practice the words and spelling rule.

7) There is also one free game you can play to help you learn the spellings.

8) On a Friday, click on test and record your results.

Please note that if you find these spellings difficult then you may look at a different year groups spelling rules and try one of those as part of your weekly spelling task.

LO: To describe using fronted adverbials

Over the last few days, you have been learning about fronted adverbials and how to use them when describing the action taking place. We have learnt that a fronted adverbial is:

A word, phrase or clause placed at the beginning of a sentence to give more information about the action in the main clause. They must be followed by a comma:

Like a speeding bullet, the boy shot forward.

Before lunch, I went to my uncle’s house.

Beyond the mountains, there was a dark spooky place.


Today, I would like you to use fronted adverbials in your extended piece of writing. I would like you to describe more about the City of Five Lights. I would like you to use your fronted adverbials to help describe the action as it takes place. To do this you will need to “write in the moment”. You will need to use your imagination to help you create a vivid picture of Flick walking through the amazing marketplace and seeing all the strange and unusual people.

To help you with today’s task I have created a video and I have put together a writing checklist. Remember that you can also use your expanded noun phrases and your embedded clauses to help develop your description.

Task Two

Plan out your setting description (use the video to support you). Choose what you will write about e.g., a market stall and all the odd things they are selling, one of the unusual people you have seen or perhaps how people react to you and what they may say to you.
