Maths – Multiplication

Lesson 16 – Multiplication

LO: To use the grid method when solving word problems.

1. I can consider how to read a word problem and find important information.

2. I can use the information to create a number sentence.

3. I can use the multiplication grid method to solve problems.

Over the last few weeks we have learnt how to use arrays and the multiplication grid method to help solve 2-digit x 1-digit number problems.

Over the next few days we will be using our new knowledge to help solve multiplication word problems.

From the video you will have seen that not all maths problems come in the format of a number sentence e.g. 3x13=. Many come in the form of a word problem e.g.

“David has 3 packets of biscuits and each packet contains 13 biscuits. How many biscuits are there in total?”

For this problem you need to find the important information and highlight it. Then you need to write your number sentence and solve the problem.

When solving the problem you may use your arrays and/or your multiplication grids.

You will find word problems on an attachment at the bottom of the page. There is also a challenge question. The answers to the questions can be found at the end of the PowerPoint.

Remember that presentation is very important. You must use a ruler to draw the multiplication grid and for your arrays.  Give yourself plenty of room and don’t to solve too many problems on one page.

If you need additional support you can use the multiplication square attached below to help you with your times tables

Experience –

For the next activity, you will have before AND after lunch to complete.

LO: To create an information video

SC1) I can use my plans to create a video

SC2) I can demonstrate effectively how to do each exercise

SC3) I can tell the viewer key points to help them with the exercise

SC4) I can evaluate my work

Today is the day for us to create our very own exercise video! Before we rush into making this, there are a few things we need to do. Before recording, you will need to practise your routine. Make sure you know what you are going to say at each part and practise putting it altogether. You could practise in front of the mirror or with a member of your family!

Again I would like to remind you that for each exercise you should be talking through how to do it, including key teaching points e.g. press ups keeping your back straight.

I am really looking forward to seeing all of your exercise videos! By the end of the weekend I’m sure I will be a lot fitter after trying them all out!

As always, it is very important to evaluate and reflect on what has gone well and what could have been better. Use the questions below to help you reflect on your exercise video:

What went well?

What could have gone better?

What would you do differently next time?

Is there anything else you would add?

Did your plan help you with your video?
