Maths

This lesson is a grow lesson designed for pupils who have fully grasped subtraction and are ready for an additional challenge. If you feel you need more practise with subtraction, select the subtraction PowerPoint on the class page and work through it instead of attempting the lesson below.

L.O. To evaluate subtraction methods (evaluating)

SC1: I can determine the method that has been used.

SC2: I can explain whether there would have been a better way.

SC3: I can justify my thinking.

Watch the tutorial:

Task 1 at 5:05 – Think of another way that the boy could do this question which would be quicker and easier.

97 - 95

Task 2 at 8:56 – Think about why the boy has replaced the 100 for 9 tens and ten ones. Can you explain why?

Task 3 at 10:38 – think of a better way that the boy could do 100 – 54. Think of a different method rather than a pictorial jotting.

Task 4 at the end of the video – go through the children’s statements and evaluate whether this is the best way to carry out the question.

Think:

  • What have they used?
  • Are the applying the method correctly?
  • If not, where are they going wrong?
  • What could they do differently which might make their subtraction quicker, easier, or less likely to make mistakes?
