English – The House with Chicken Legs/Speech writing

L.O. To write a speech from a character’s perspective

Success Criteria:

SC1: I can select appropriate vocabulary

SC2: I can show my understanding of a great speech

SC3: I can use FEARRR to ensure my speech is powerful

Today you will be linking what you have learnt about great speeches and your understanding of Marinka from ‘The House with Chicken Legs’.

Let’s remind ourselves about what makes an effective speech...

  • Use of FEARRR

  • Great delivery

  • Encouraging people

  • Making people change their minds

  • Encouraging people

Please watch this clip of Greta Thunberg’s speech to world leaders:

As you watch... THINK..What do you think of her delivery? How does she make you feel? Does she do a good job? Why?

TASK

Now, let’s think back to the text:

Marinka dreams of having a normal life:

Write a speech (using the writing frame as a prompt) about her wanting a normal life and not wanting to be the next guardian.

I have attached chapter 1, for you to re-read and use to help you.

Maths – 1234 (problem solving)

L.O. - to identify and use appropriate operations to solve problems.

SC1: I can choose and use the correct operation.

SC2: I can use trial and improvement.

SC3: I can explain my methods and reasoning.

Today’s problem to solve is: -

1, 2, 3, 4

Using the digits 1, 2, 3 and 4 and +, - , x and ÷ symbols make the numbers from 1 to 20.

Each of the numbers must be used every time, for example 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 = 10 or (4+2) – (3+1) = 2

Top tips!

  1. List the numbers from 1-20 down your page or use my chart.

  1. Think about how you can combine the numbers 1, 2, 3 and 4 to make different totals.

  1. Remember you have to use 1, 2, 3 and 4 every time but you can use any combination of +, - , x and ÷ and brackets (these will be very useful).

  1. Extra challenge – can you extend your problem solving to include 21-26?

  1. Do you want something easier? Just attempt numbers 1-10 or as many as you can.

The answers are included on our class page so you can self-mark- however, your answers might be different to mine, there are many different ways to solve this problem.

I would love to see a picture of your work too!

Challenge 10 – an ideal world

LO: To research my chosen idea.

SC1. I can apply my questions to aid my research.

SC2. I can use online research tools effectively and appropriately.

SC3. I can make notes about my chosen subject.

Today, you will begin to research your chosen topic for your “ideal world” speech. Even if you began to research yesterday, you will continue today and add to the notes you have already taken. Your focus for your notes, to help with your speech, should be:

  • What do I want to tell my chosen audience?

Here you should be thinking about what information you want to give to your audience.

  • What questions do I think my chosen audience will have?

Your speech should show that you have conducted thorough research and that you have facts to support your arguments.

  • How can I engage my audience and make them believe in my “ideal world”?

Here you should use certain key facts which will trigger an audience's emotions and make them believe that your “ideal world” ideas are very important and that they cannot ignore them.

If you would like some additional support, I have added some notes to my reflective journal example.

2:15-2:45
