Guided Reading

LO: To be able to understand how to use inference

Please read the pages attached below and then answer the questions below. Make sure that you justify your answers using the conjunctions because.

Questions

  1. Can you infer as to why J K Rowling used the word parchment when describing the letter to Harry rather than paper? Explain your answer? 

  2. What can you infer that Uncle Vernon was feeling is his face turned from red to green faster than a traffic light? 

  3. What would Harry be thinking when he was listening through the crack under the door to the kitchen? 

  4. What can we infer about the character Uncle Vernon if he was talking ‘wildly’? 

  5. What can you infer Harry would be thinking and feeling when he found out the people sending the letters knew he was in the smallest bedroom? 

  6. What did the scream come from at the end of the passage? USe your knowledge of the story you have read to inform your answer?

English

Today we are going to edit and revise our writing. I am sure that you have produced some really nice work, but we can always make it better. 

For this we are going to use ARMS

A = add = Does your writing make sense?

R = remove = who cares? Does your writing help the story, does it need to be there

M = Move = Sentence starters, are they varied and different? 

S = substitute = Can you upskill any words for better ones. Use a thesaurus to help you or google

 

Here is my first sentence from my modelled version yesterday. 

To revise your work you take it 1 sentence at a time and go through ARMS. 

First you ask, does that sentence make sense? Which it does, so there is nothing to change. 

Second, is there anything that does not help the story? No so again there is nothing to change

Next, you look at the starter, where I have used a fronted adverbial phrase for place, so no need to change. 

Finally, I look for words that I would like to upskill and improve. I think that I can improve SITTING to a better word. So I would use a thesaurus or google to look for better words. 

There are - perch or rest. I like rest as it tells me about the character of the frogs at the same time, that they are comfortable and happy with the situation. So I will change it to that. 

You should do this with every sentence. Go through one at a time. I have attached my modelled version of the editing and revising below to help you.

Maths

LO: To be able to understand addition and subtraction problems with multiple steps (KNOW knowledge)

SC3: I can solve 2-step problems involving addition and subtraction

 

We are taking our maths on again  little further, please watch the video to help you understand the concept and how I would like it to be set out.
