Have a look through, if you would like help with a level or a book to read a day then please email me and I will help. Guided Reading LO: To be able to understand how to use inference. English 9:50-10:30 LO: To be able to use appropriate vocabulary to add description. SC1: I can identify adjectives to describe a character’s appearance. SC2: I can apply my knowledge of imagery to describe a character’s appearance. SC3: I can select ambitious, yet relevant, vocabulary to describe appearance. ]#
Today, as we unpick the features which make a great character description, we start with appearance. Using the expert piece, identify the words and phrases which Roald Dahl uses to describe appearance. What techniques is he using to create these descriptions which tell the reader about the appearance of a character? Then, choosing your own familiar character, create a colour-coded mind map to describe their appearance using adjectives, metaphors and similes. From your mind map, I would then like you to write a description of your character’s appearance using the information in your mind map to support you but also demonstrating your knowledge of varied sentence lengths (covered on Monday). On the documents attached to the bottom of this page, you will find sentences to describe appearance which I would like you to up-level. You will also find an adjective word mat which you may find useful. Reflection- Which of the three devices did you find most challenging? How can you develop this weakness?
If you’re finding this task challenging, try recording similes and adjectives to describe your character, or Mr Wormwood who I modelled in my tutorial. You can ‘magpie’ some of my ideas and build your sentences to describe the way he looks.
